It’s been a whirlwind week of activity for Bajan born pop sensation Rihanna. The young singer was voted as one of the “100 Most Beautiful People” in the 2007 issue up there with Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez.
Promoting her chart topping new album “Good Girl Gone Bad” Rihanna is also appearing in the June edition of Essence Magazine. A spearheaded by the Barbados Tourism Authority, the multi-page fashion spread and interview features Rihanna photographed in various locales in Barbados.
One picture shows Rihanna standing elegantly in a simple red Michael Kors dress in the doorway between two jalousie-type green and yellow doors at the popular West Coast bar “Crocodile Den.”
Trini Faces for Shabeau
It was lauded as a competition where the “Caribbean’s finest faces” competed for the title of the Face of Shabeau 2007.Young models Kai Leggard and Michelle Kurbanali, both of Trinidad and Tobago were the eventual winners.
Barbadian models Roberta McDowell and Kevin Webster, who took the top places in the local competition, gave fierce competition, as did many of the other islands, but it was the Trinidadian duo who captured the attention of the international model agencies Barrington Casting and Slamm Management.
The delegates were judged by the international agencies that had among them international photographers, also doubled as scouts.
Publisher of Shabeau Magazine, Joan Ward-Stewart said in her speech that it was a dream come through to be afforded the opportunity to award the designers and beauticians who work tirelessly to produce products of international quality...
The management team at Shabeau has decided to move the competition to Trinidad and plans to continue hosting the finals wherever the winners are based.
Comedians Help Friend
In Barbados Beat Issue - #23 we reported on the fate Barbadian comedian Trevor Eastmond Eastmond who was burnt about the body and lost his home in a fire that also destroyed another house and damaged three others.
The fire, which has left seven people homeless and also damaged three vehicles, reportedly started following an explosion in Eastmond's residence.
Last Thursday some of the region's top comedians announced that they would be putting on the Belly Laff Comedy Festival at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on June 17 is in aid of the comedian.
The Gymnasium itself is leading the way in expressing goodwill, having reduced its rental fee "considerably", said Peter Boyce of Madd Entertainment.
Mechell Rudder, marketing manager of Gymnasium Ltd, said the venue jumped at the opportunity to contribute to Eastmond's benefit show, noting the Gymnasium had a long association with Adventure Promotions, which is staging the event, Madd Entertainment and Eastmond himself.
Weekly Wrap-Up
The National Centre of Korean Performing Arts of Namdo gave two performances in Barbados this weekend as part of their Caribbean tour. The 12-member group showcased music, dance and song on Saturday. Having already performed in Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana they will now visit to Suriname on the 12th and St. Vincent & the Grenadines on the 16th and Grenada June 19th, 2007…. Bajan writer George Lamming turned 80 on Friday the 8th. He was honoured that day by the Barbadian government. A new primary school is to be called George Lamming Primary.
