So much is happening in Barbados’ entertainment scene that we have to serve you a jumbo sized order of this week’s Barbados Beat. We serve you a huge order of feting as the season gets hotter, a spicy set of controversy and a greasy side order as tragedy hits one party.

1) Spicy controversy…

Barry Chandler is the 2006 Party Monarch and the 2006 Road March winner for his hit song “Flames” composed by ace producer, Neil Bernard. But now his name is the centre of a controversy with National Cultural Foundation (NCF)

Chandler was to perform on Saturday at the BNB Crop over Gala perhaps the most traditional aspect of the Crop Over Festival.

Dwayne Grazette, manager of Chandler, and the band Jabae said earlier this week the NCF refused to pay the $2 000 appearance fee that included a performance and a parade.

“They want to offer the Bajan artistes a lot of monkey fees, and want you to be exclusive to them and paying little fees.” Said Grazette. “I asked for $3 500 knowing they would want to bargain… I would have come down to $2 500."

Corporate Communications Officer of the NCF, Penny Gomez, said "there is a scale of fees for each event and his request was outside that scale of fees for the Gala.”

Performances WERE given by 2006 Calypso Monarch David "Kid Site" Piggott and 2006 Junior calypso monarchs Tiffany Goddard and Kishee Moore.

2) Mellow Main Course…

Grazette may have found it hard to swallow, but with United Artists of Barbados and the NCF everything’s creamy and mellow.

The Performers' Contract, with which United Artistes of Barbados (UAB) had a problem, has been shelved.

The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) "will revert to using the Performers' Contract of 2006. The prize monies for the Party Monarch competition have been increased and artistes are now allowed the courtesy of having their sponsors, competing and non-competing, acknowledged by the master of ceremonies at NCF events.

3) Snow Cones and Sugary Fun at Weekend Fetes.

This weekend it was “fete after fete.” First there was the Berger Boyz on Thursday at the popular “Club Xtreme” nightclub where snow cone carts and old time sweets were served to the party goers for the ‘Back in Time” theme.

Every single artiste popular this Season was present on Friday at the Youth Mania 2 show. There it was clean fun for the 14-18 set at Tims, who parties on hot soca and sugary coke, but no alcohol was served.

T hat night Monstapiece headed by producer and DJ Peter Coppin launched its new album with performances by a ton of soca artistes at “The Boatyard” and Baje International had its first fete for their Mas band “The Lost Tribe.”

On Saturday Krosfyah, led by Edwin Yearwood brought all their friends together for the soca fete “Jumpstart” and fetes happened all across the island.

4) Hot and Sour end to Campus Boyz Fete.

However, on Sunday partygoers were sent scampering when the sound of gunshots rang out at the popular Campus Boyz fete at the Barbados Museum.

According to reports two men, Winston Brathwaite of Maynard Land, Bush Hall and Patrick Thornhill of Bourne's Village in St. George were both shot in their left legs.

Band spokesman, Junior Browne explained that the incident included patrons who were not members of the CampusBoyz Kadooment Band and the group is working with the Royal Barbados Police Force to ensure that the altercation is fully investigated.

Due to the large crowds that attended the events, they will be moved to a new location, to be announced shortly.

5) Dessert a.k.a “Weekly Wrap-Up”

The Junior Monarch contestants vied for a place in the finals on Sunday’s semi-finals. That evening new arts production team the “Ministry of Style” produced their first fashion show and De Red Boyz launched their new album “Soca Bonfire” featuring tracks by Edwin Yearwood, Biggie Irie, Farmer Nappy, J-Co, Don Trent and newcomer Marlon Fox among others.
