Barbados Beat-Issue#37

Yes, this writer is back on "the Beat" after our two weeks hiatus. This is because of the unfortunate cave-in, which killed a family of 5 and left the country devastated. Having spent a week on the site of the cave-in I was unable to bring you your usual fare of Entertainment in "Bimshire."

But from this grim horror came some hope. Last weekend all the media houses of Barbados united with corporate Barbados for a national telethon. Barbados Cares - The National Response. The telethon, which was conceptualised in response to the tragedy aimed at raising funds towards the Barbados Media Disaster Relief Fund to assist families and communities in Barbados. With many Barbadian entertainers performing at a reduced cost for the four hours, the telethon raised 4 hours.

"Hotta" Music from Former Miss Barbados World.

Moving away from the past we look to the future. This weekend 8 young women will vie for the Miss Barbados World 2007 title. Similarly 9 males will also compete at the Sherbourne Conference Centre for the Mister Barbados World 2007 title. It's still possible to see the contestants and vote for them at www.missbarbadosworld.com/

Coincidentally, the 2005 Miss Barbados World winner has taken a step towards a new career.

Statuesque and of Nigerian descent, Marielle Onyeche is a final year as the Cave Hill campus studying bio-chemistry. However, last week she revealed that she is also building her musical repertoire with the aim of releasing a music album in the near future.

No stranger to the performing and literary arts, Marielle entered the Barbados Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch as "The Artist" 7 years ago and won the competition her first year.

Now working with local soca/hip-hop duo "De Maniacs” Marielle has already released one ragga soca track entitled "Hotta” and has two more singles on the way.

"ELLA ELLA ELLA"

We move from an up and coming female Barbadian singe we move to Bajan Superstar Rihanna. While many were focusing this week on Britney Spears' disastrous performance at the annual MTV video music awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada Rihanna picked up two awards.

The 19-year-old, whose 2007 single Umbrella spent ten weeks at No. 1 in Britain, took MTV's "Single Of The Year" award, for "Umbrella" beating the likes of Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse.

Rihanna also scooped the Video Of The Year award, also for Umbrella.

High Flying Kite

And while Rihanna's new album "Good Girl Gone Bad" continues to climb the charts. Barbadian Pop-Rock group "Kite" launched their 2nd album "Thirteen Degrees North."

Three years ago, "Kite", comprised of JJ Poulter and Brian Marshall launched their first album, "Up In The Air." Subsequently one of their singles "Firefly" featured on the US CBS network, television series Ghost Whisperer and Canadian TV series 'Degrassi.' From this they secured a subsequent publishing deal with LA-based RipTide Music. Kite member Brian Marshall told the Barbados Advocate that the new album takes the form of an enhanced CD featuring a full music video to 'Firefly', a photo gallery, and an unlikely behind-the-scenes look at making a rock album in the Caribbean... "The album features at least three songs with steel-pan and strong reggae and ska influences. We feel it has a very strong Caribbean vibe."

Fans of the album will be able to hear the new album live on September, 20 2007 at Jumbies, St. Lawrence Gap for the public Launch of "Thirteen Degrees North," which will feature the band and special guest performers.
