Mashramani masqueraders in Carib costumes
The Guyananese government has decided to postpone Mashmarani celebrations; after consultation with the with various concerned parties. In the wake of recent flooding the country is still in the process of a massive clean-up effort and President Jagdeo believes that priority must be given to returning the country to a state of normalcy before Mash can be celebrated.

Mashramani (Guyana Carnival) was supposed to be held on February 23 (Guyana’s Independence Day), and will now be held on 26 May. On the new Mash date( May 26), the celebration will include a costume parade, calypso and steel pan competitions, as the country celebrates its freedom and independence. This year's theme will be Mash Alive in 2005.
