The first major American exhibition to explore black fashion, Black Style Now will showcase the attire, accessories, and looks that define contemporary fashion; including a strapless fuchsia, velvet gown worn by Lil' Kim to the 2005 Costume Institute Gala, an original wool-pinstripe suit worn by Diddy to the 2006 CFDA Awards, and a custom-designed white and cranberry leather, monogrammed cap made for LL Cool J in the 1980s.
The exhibition which opens on September 9th will present historic photos, video images and stylized vignettes to reveal how today’s fashion is shaped by African-American style. Other artists with items on display include Lenny Kravitz, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons, Kanye West and Andre 3000.
Diddy will host the grand opening, which will take place Friday, September 8th at the Museum of the City of New York.
