Jamaica's National Hero, The Honourable Marcus Garvey would have celebrated his 121st earthstrong this coming Sunday, August 17, 2008 and to this end, Ashanti Oasis Vegetarian Restaurant remembers the stalwart for his contributions, not only to Jamaicans, but also other Africans, who are abroad, by hosting a brunch.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in St. Ann, Jamaica to parents Marcus Mosiah Garvey Sr and Sarah Jane Richards. He grew up and acquired the titles of publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black nationalist, orator and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

Garvey was fundamental in advancing the Pan-African philosophy that resulted in a global mass movement focusing on Africa, known as Garveyism. The UNIA promoted this philosophy as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam, to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey to be a prophet).

Throughout his 52 years, Garvey blatantly chose a road of candour and black power. He deeply believed in the Black race as one that could survive on its own; if only its people would unite and commit themselves to the hard work and fight it would require.

Even though, his dream is yet to be totally realized, Garvey's dreams, words and teachings still holds strong today by inspiring, motivating and educating those who seek to understand the plight of the Black race.

This Sunday, August 17 Ashanti Oasis pays tribute to this great man by hosting a brunch at the Restaurant, located in The Hope Botanical Gardens. The menu features delectable vegetarian delights including Curried Jackfruit, Plantain and Peanut Porridge, Veggie Balls, Candied Tofu with fruits and Falafel with Tahini Sauce among much more.
