Gen's Couture was launched in October in Trinidad.  Tova Skeete, the young Trinidadian entrepreneur has quite a vision that she recently shared with us at IslandEvents.com

Tova is the last of three children, the only girl, so her mother's love for clothes and 'looking pretty' were passed on to her. Tova's mother is a former beauty pageant contestant as well (placed second) so I guess a bit of her 'skills' rubbed off!  Raised in Valencia, Trinidad, she attended primary schools in Sangre Grande and Arima, and then went on to El Dorado Secondary Comprehensive. She migrated to the United Kingdom right after that.

Q: How would you describe yourself?

A: Independent, Reliable, Determined. I'm a fashion conscious individual who simply wants more people, more Trinis to tap into their glamorous side...jeans and a tee should not be your wardrobe's answer to every question asked!   Honestly, I'm a typical contemporary young woman in every sense...driven, fun loving, and all that's in between.

Q: What is the story behind Gen's Couture?

A:Simply put, I wanted to share my love of clothes, shoes, accessories, - DRESSING UP - with people. For me fashion has nothing to do with price, or label, it simply showcases a person's ability to create, develop and successfully carry off whatever look they desire...with style of course.  That's part of the reason why I decided to include image consultancy as part of the GC package as some people can admit they may need a lil help from time to time. 'Couture' was chosen because I wanted clients to associate my boutique with top notch service. It's not only about providing 'nice' clothes, it should be an experience; one that makes you WANT to come back. At the end of each appointment, I'd like both me and the client to fully satisfied, knowing that it was time and money well spent.

Q: Who are the designers?

A: Items are sourced from within the UK, nothing is custom made, but services are available for custom fittings. I think the local (Trini) market is saturated with products from the US so GC allows clients to enjoy different styles and silhouettes from those which are already widely available.

Q: Would you extend your services to local artistes in Trinidad for clothing during Carnival season?

A: I never thought about it, but now that you mention it I'd love the opportunity to introduce some of our females artists to new fashion ideas. Sounds really fun.

Q: Is your store only for female clothing? Do you hope to expand later on into clothing for men?

A: The initial plan was to stock only female clothing but since the launch a number of guys have expressed interest in GC. I was hesitant about stocking men's clothes since there are only so many ways to wear trousers/shorts/tees/shirts, but if that's what they want, that's what they'll get. By carnival I intend to have a number of pieces for men, so we'll see how that goes.

Q:  How would you summarize your first fashion show?

A: Rewarding! Two models never showed up, the DJ was 2 hours late but the show went on. The feedback and support that I have received since then show me that people genuinely enjoyed the show. Despite a few minor setbacks my guests got to enjoy a show that I'm proud to say was totally worth it!

Q: What is your ultimate goal?

A: Personally, at the end of it all I simply want to be able to say 'I was successful'. In the business sense, I want to allow everyone an opportunity to look 'the part', no need to think any look is unattainable. I want to encourage people to broaden their style spectrums. In other words, don't be afraid to think Couture. :)
