Peter George, Douglas K. Gordon and Joseph Rapael are all smiles as they pose for this pic

Peter George of Trent Promotions received a tremendous amount of publicity over Trent’s recent Ushermania Concert held in Trinidad. While some patrons were disappointed about certain facets of the concert, others were high in their praise, particularly over the stage production. We recently met with Peter at Trotters, his popular restaurant & pub where we asked him to clear the air on Ushermania. Here is his side of the story….

So Peter, I guess you’ve heard all that’s been said about Ushermania…but what are your own thoughts on how the concert went?

The way I see it, the concert was a real success and the level of production was certainly of the highest international standard. Our agency was flooded with e-mails from USHER's production team on their return back to the US on the level of professionalism displayed by TRENT on every level, including production/stage etc. It was unfortunate that USHER's management was not able to see things eye to eye with us. We had originally planned seating and covers in the VIP section, but his security detail insisted they be moved. Considering we overlooked specifying it in previous riders, as we thought it insignificant…..we had to change the plans under threats from his team. We do acknowledge that the VIP section was less than expected but given the circumstances, we did the best we could and we gave VIP ticket patrons, two all inclusive ultra-premium parties…which in themselves were worth the money. The local artistes were phenomenal and all members of our team worked tirelessly....the rain came at an unbelievably bad time and there were some other factors like the free fete in QPS, Independence day…. but all in all much was learned and next time, I guarantee it will be flawless.

As you put it that way, I guess I can now understand your point of view. But what do you believe led to the late start of the show? Not only that, may patrons complained of mud being stuck to their shoes and clothes!!

The mud was caused by God (smiling). USHER came on late because they insisted, against our advice, that he stay at Hilton until showtime, even though we explained the traffic scenario, that fell on deaf ears. Needless to say, instead of transporting him from Trotters at 9.30 pm we were stuck in traffic and had to send a squad car for him! Had he been in Trotters as scheduled the show would have been absolutely on time.

I guess organizing a concert of this magnitude was some experience for you. What did you learn from the whole exercise?

One big lesson learned was to lock up even the most minute of details weeks in advance of the show. International artistes need to understand what it takes to sell shows in third world markets. USHER's team thought that his name in lights was enough to sell 25000 tickets. We pleaded with them to come to Trinidad early and market the show but they countered that "the artistes responsibility is to perform not promote". Next time, many things would be different, but they could not be different if they were not learned this time.

Have you received feedback from the patrons? What did they say about the concert?

The feedback obviously was mixed. The General admission people were thoroughly fulfilled...as they really got the show of a lifetime.......VIP/Special Reserved felt a little shortchanged and we certainly empathize.…but there really is no International styled venue in Trinidad and I personally was disappointed by the OVAL. Again, I think from a performance and production standpoint, there were many things to praise. But from a venue layout standpoint, there were some issues… as a show of this level in the US, for example, would be in an indoor facility which has a capacity of 30000??!!! There will be more impetus on planning and venue preparation next time and I guarantee enjoyment for all level of patrons.

What about others who were involved in the planning process…do you feel let down by anyone?

My personal agent was the only person I was disappointed with. She failed in almost all categories and many of the pitfalls that I faced with the artiste could have been diffused if I had a more competent agent...this again was part of the learning curve. However, as far as local input...I cannot begin to talk about the effort and commitment...I would be here till next week....they were all magic and I cannot begin to express my gratitude and love.

I’ve heard some people say that there was behind-the-scenes commess. Is this true?

The only commess behind the scenes was with USHER's team as we were trying to get what we thought necessary to make the show go. As far as the local team was concerned, there were absolutely no problems.

The much publicized after-show event was anticipated by many. Why was Usher a no-show?

I was told due to the show finishing at 1.30 and his leaving to the airport at 4.30, that he was tired. Only the next day, however, I was told he was in Carnival bar drinking and socializing...That was a bit hurtful, but the party was great without him…showing Trinis resilience and uniqueness, as well as individuality! The agency was made aware of that and they apologized on his behalf, whatever that is worth!

Ouch! (laughing)….how do you feel about that?

I have personally spoken with Usher’s managers who maintains that they lived up to their end of the deal at all times. There is clearly a conflict in understanding there, which I would much rather put behind me now and move on.

What about Usher….have you heard from him since? What did he say about the show and Trinidad?

I also spoke with Usher…he called me!! He hopes that the negativity does not harbor itself too long and he would love to do another show in Trinidad....clearly that is not realistic...but I appreciated the call. I have his email address and phone number in case any girls want it...(laughing). He did not have enough time to really experience Trinidad and Tobago, but he did say that the people were very warm.

So, now that Ushermania is over, what else does Trent Promotions have in store for us? I hear that another big personality is being lined up.…

Yes…there is another big act lined up...we are at the table now...But at this time my eyes are on The Enrique concert, wishing Damage Control Promotions the best of luck. I would not want to interfere with that show by launching or leaking any names until after their show. The market is very sensitive and promoters need to work together to bring the market to a new level.

After your experience with Ushermania, what would you do differently at your next concert?

Like I said previously.....my next act will know well in advance EXACTLY what they must do to help promote the show and connect with the local audience...Also the venue would be properly planned to ensure total satisfaction to all. Proper timing is also of paramount importance and we will be looking at that very closely.

Is there a big international star you would like to bring to TT and who is so far elusive?

I must say yes as I have tried earnestly to bring MADONNA, but while there is some interest....she has proved elusive. I am fairly confident that a breakthrough might happen. I have also had the same response from BON JOVI, but I am sure they too will come around one day!!

What about future plans….would you one day look to promote shows up the Caribbean?

Yes!! If the act is big enough and there is a market, we would certainly consider up the island promotions.

Well…you’ve certainly accomplished alot at such a young age! What else do you have in your planned career path?

TV productions, Party promotions and continuous commitment to dining and entertainment are all part of the future plans. Actually we are in the conceptualization stage of a TV production that will be quite interesting. Keep your eyes open.!!
