Borough Celebrations Score
This weekend all roads led to Point Fortin for the much anticipated Borough Day. Saturday’s jouver’t and pan celebrations were the culmination of a week of activities that including the crowning of Miss Point Fortin.
One of the highlights of the jouver’t was the Legacy, 91.9FM and Synergy Road show which included performances by Mista Vybe, Miss Alysha, the Synergy Soca Stars, Ronnie Mc Intosh and Iwer, much to the delight of the huge crowd. The road show was part of the Legacy 91.9FM mas band, which proved to be one of the prettiest bands on the road, on a day that was dominated by mud, paint and oil.
Chutney Galore
On Saturday night chutney artiste Falco (Ramdeen Maharaj) captured the coveted 2006 National Chutney Monarch title from ten other contenders.
In second and third place were D Hitman (Neeshan Prabhoo) and Dubraj Persad respectively.
The competition which was held at Skinner Park, San Fernando included guest performances by The Original Defosto Himself, Maximus Dan, Shurwayne Winchester and Kes the Band. Anil Bheem and his band the Bheemers were unable to perform due to time constrains.
Stalin’s Kaiso Festival
Five time National calypso Monarch and reigning King of Kings Calypso Monarch Black Stalin will celebrate his 49 years in calypso with a concert on June 3rd at the Jean Pierre Complex.
The show, in honour of the Soca Warriors, will include performances by Roy Cape All Stars, Ken ‘Professor’ Philmore, Explainer, Organiser and 3 Canal.
Pan family heads to Hollywood
The eight member steelband family from the East Dry River in Port of Spain is set to take Hollywood by Storm in August.
The popular Pan Family Steel Orchestra, run by parents Cary and Karen Codrington, includes their six children whose ages range from six to seventeen.
The panside is part of a 25 member delegation from T&T which will take part in a music festival in Hollywood.
Cultural show for Peru game
Calypso, soca, chutney, tassa and pan will be in abundance on Wednesday when the World Cup bound Soca Warriors take on Peru in friendly football match at the Hasley Crawford Stadium.
Destra, Shurwayne Winchester, Maximus Dan, 3-Canal, Rikki Jai, Woodbrook Playboyz Steel Orchestra, Laventille Rhythm Section and Sagicor Exodus among other performers will provide pre-game entertainment.
Prior to kick off fans entering the venue will be welcomed by tassa drummers and then later on Woodbrook and Laventille Rhythm Section will continue to build the excitement.
There will also be performances by calypsonians Lord Almanac and Abebele, Carib Shiv Shakti Dancers, newly crowned 2006 Chutney Monarch Falco, 3-Canal and some students of the Arima New Government School.
As kick off approaches taking the mic will be Rikki Jai, Colin Lucas and Iwer George, before Sagicor Exodus’ 35-minute mini concert.
The final minutes before the game will belong to Shurwayne Winchester, Destra and Maximus Dan who will end with Fighter (Soca Warrior).
