Vybe captures 1st Caribbean Soca Monarch title
Mista Vybe captured the first Caribbean Soca Monarch title in St Lucia on Sunday night (16th July 2006).
The former OECS competition was changed to the Caribbean Soca Monarch this year, when for the first time Trinidadian artistes were invited to compete.
T&T representative Mista Vybe and Nadia Batson were chosen because their songs have strong St Lucian influence and are extremely popular in the Caribbean.
Nadia’s One Island has a heavy Zouk influence and Vybe’s Ting for De Road came from a line from one of St Lucian soca artist Ninja Dan’s compositions last year.
Mista Vybe, affectionately know as the Ting Man, seemed to work a spell on the audience as the rain came and he explained that it too was ‘ting for the road’.
St Lucia’s Ninja Dan came second with Labouway (mud), capturing sixteen points less than Mista Vybe. Tying for third was St Lucian Soca Monarch Alpha with Happy Birthday Carnival and Platinum George with May I.
(somebody say ting for de road, ting ting ting ting weh how that didn’t make it in T&T road march race I will never know, but all the same we Trinis proud too bad)
Bachelor is St Lucia Calypso Monarch
On Saturday night in front of an enthusiastic capacity audience Bachelor captured the 2006 St Lucia Calypso Monarch title.
Amassing 739 points to put himself thirteen points ahead of The Mighty Floopsy with 726, Nintus with 725 points and Pep with 720 points.
Held at the Mindoo Phillip Park in St Lucia, the night belonged to the presentations as calypsonians utilised planes, boats, cities and buildings for their portrayals.
(What killing me is the names of these artistes, where they get them from? I now hearing that the Mighty Floopsy is a 14 year old lad, like he is a Machel in the making)
Fireman Hooper feels cheated
Vincy Soca Monarch Delroy 'Fireman" Hooper wants some answers as to why his hit, Wukie, wukie did not win this year's Road March title.
Skarpyon and Jamesy P captured the coveted title with Leave me alone.
The artist has five soca monarch titles under his belt but he has never won a Road March title.
Wukie wukie was written specially to capture the Road March this year, and according to Hooper, he didn't hear any song in this year's Carnival that could have challenged his chances of wearing the Road March crown.
Hooper also does not understand why he was never given an opportunity to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the OECS Soca Monarch Competition in St. Lucia, which has had participation from Bomani and Poorsah.
Bits sports new look
Soca artiste lil bits is sporting a new look these days.
The 21 year old artist who is known for hits like Bump, Crush and Carnival Country featuring Bunji Garlin, revealed her new look at Saturday’s Soca for Summer 2.
Described as a more mature look the petite artiste will use the new look to cement her transition from lil bits to Bits.
Bits will be part of the upcoming Crop Over celebration in Barbados.
(I wonder if that will really help people stop seeing her as lil bits?)
No Atlantik in US
Robert Nurse, the road manager of Atlantik has issued a formal apology for the band’s inability to fulfill a booking scheduled for this Saturday, June 24 in Washington DC.
The apology lists difficulties with getting the band’s work permits, due to the late submission of its documentation by its agent, resulting in the band forgoing all commitments in the United States thus far.
(There must be an easier way for bands to do this US work permit thing. Ah tired hear this excuse. Dem bands should not have any problems they does travel everywhere, every year. What is them Americans problem?)
