Regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Nils Kastberg, was in Speyside Tobago last Friday, for the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding for a strategic partnership between the LOC 2009 Caribbean Games and UNICEF.

This UNICEF and LOC 2009 Caribbean Games partnership will facilitate strategic project interventions in volatile communities throughout the region to nurture child friendly environments.

Throughout the tenure of this strategic partnership, UNICEF projects implemented in the Caribbean will be reinforced through this commitment to protect vulnerable, at-risk children and adolescents against violence and abuse through the utilisation of sports.

A project was initiated by UNICEF and done in conjunction with the Tobago House of Assembly, the Trinidad and Tobago Alliance for Sport and Physical Education (TTASPE) and the Red Cross.

LOC Director Dr Arthur Potts, signing on behalf of the LOC 2009 Caribbean Games, stressed the importance of the UNICEF partnership, stating that the games were not just about athletes but about demonstrating to the youth of the Caribbean that sport is the one of the best weapons that they can use to move forward.
About the 2009 Caribbean Games.

The Inaugural Caribbean Games will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from July 13-19 2009. A major objective of these games is to provide a platform where elite and emerging athletes have the opportunity to showcase their skills before a Caribbean audience, and by extension a global one, in five sporting disciplines—athletics, boxing, netball, tennis and volleyball.
