Sir Garfield Sobers, the greatest all-rounder the world has ever seen, will join one of West Indies’ greatest batsmen and icon, Sir Everton Weekes, and West Indies’ fast-bowling legend, Charlie Griffith to host a coaching clinic for 20 lucky players in the 22nd Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament today.
One cricketer from each of the 20 teams participating in the current Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament will be selected the opportunity to participate in a special Digicel Coaching Clinic, an initiative of the mobile telecommunications company and the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA).
Digicel’s head of marketing, Robert Chase, noted that the company was excited to facilitate the clinic as a great opportunity for the young cricketers to not only meet the three greats but to get personal advice from the experts on how to boost their game.
Chase said, “The coaching clinic forms part of our contribution to the Digicel Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament and is in keeping with our commitment to the development of cricket throughout the region. We are sure that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will be a valuable experience for all participants.”
Commenting on the importance of the Digicel Coaching Clinic, Sir Garry, who is also a specialist consultant with the BTA, said that the young participants span a cross-section of countries throughout the region and the United Kingdom (UK) and each participant will have an equal opportunity to gain sound advice and practical tips to enhance their skills.
The tournament, which continued on Friday and Monday July 21, will climax in what is predicted to be a nail-biting final at Kensington Oval on Tuesday July 22, which is free to the public.
The top players from each team will play in an all-star game on Thursday July 23 at the 3Ws Oval of the University of the West Indies.
Thus far, defending champions, Trinidad Under-17, lead Zone One with 24 points and remain unbeaten thus far. Meanwhile, the Lodge School is enjoying a similar position at the top of Zone B in what continues to be an intense competition.
